Why do you think Black History Month is important?
Because it’s one month that our history and culture gets celebrated world-wide. For people to learn and remember our worth and background.
Tell us a bit about your chosen art form/dance style:
Tap dance. [Tap dance is a type of dance characterised by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion. Tap dance has its roots in the fusion of several ethnic percussive dances, including African tribal dances.]
Why does this dance style appeal to you?
Dance is very healing and engaging for me; I forget about life struggles when I dance and music has power to it. Tap is something I fell into and I was naturally good due to my history in African dance – Tap and African dance are like cousins; the rhythms, footwork and use of co-ordination are very similar.
What’s your biggest achievement in this field?
I did an Old Navy campaign where I was tapping and the only black girl representing.
Where do you plan to take this dance style?
I want to be a Tap examiner and build interest in it, as it’s not a very popular style.
Who inspires you and why?
The Nicholas Brothers because of there diversity, energy and tricks.
What advice would you give to those interested in this style?
Take your time and learn from different people.
If you could try any other art form, what would you do?
Kizomba – I love the passion and connection.
