Why do you think Black History Month is important?
Black people have contributed so much to society globally, so it’s important that our works are highlighted and recognised. Although I believe that BHM should be ALL YEAR ROUND, it’s still a positive step in the right direction.
Tell us a bit about your chosen art form/dance style:
I specialize in Twerk Fitness which is still quite new to the fitness industry. I only know a handful of companies doing this worldwide. Twerking is deeply rooted in African history and is said to have first started in Ivory Coast, however, as a child I remember watching my grandma “twerk” – it’s a key part of my Nigerian heritage.
Why does this dance style appeal to you?
Not only is it fun, it’s so empowering. There’s just something about being able to move your booty in this way that gives a woman a sense of confidence like never before (if you don’t believe me – just try it!)
What’s your biggest achievement in this field?
My biggest achievement so far would be my first certification training in Dublin, Ireland
whereby five instructors achieved their license to teach my signature class, “Twerk After Work”.
Where do you plan to take this dance style?
I plan to take this worldwide, so far I have taught in over seven cities, five countries and three continents but there are still so many more to go. I would love to conquer Asia and have the younger generation “bam bam boogie-omg” around the world, just like Zumba, but bigger and better.
Who inspires you and why?
My Dad inspires me because he travelled from Nigeria to the UK with just one suitcase and has managed to now run a few of his own businesses single-handedly. Although faced with so much uncertainty and hardship he still has the most positive outlook on life!
What advice would you give to those interested in this style?
I would say just get out there meet like-minded people, subscribe to some dope people on YouTube and other social media platforms. Get inspired and then just practice, practice, practice!
If you could try any other art form, what would you do?
I would try contemporary or lyrical! Just because it’s so out of my comfort zone and I love to do things that scare me!
